Huffaker is south Reno’s original address, the stretch of the valley around South Virginia Street and Huffaker Lane where a ranching town stood before Reno itself. Today it is an established, unpretentious neighborhood of 1970s to 1990s split-levels and ranches, with condo and townhome pockets toward Double R Boulevard and the Huffaker Hills rising as the back fence.
Lending here covers the whole first half of a homeowner’s life: FHA and conventional on the starter condos, where Art reviews the HOA and condo certification before you write, VA for veterans, move-up conventional on the single-family streets, and HELOCs for owners who bought decades ago and are sitting on serious equity.
Geography puts everything close: South Virginia and South McCarran frame the neighborhood, the Double R tech and office corridor is next door, Huffaker Hills Regional Park adds 251 acres of lookout trails behind the houses, and the airport, Meadowood and South Meadows job centers are all within about ten minutes.
Per 2026 northern Nevada market guides, Huffaker trades from the high 200s for condos through the mid 400s to 500s for single-family homes, one of south Reno’s few remaining value doors. Ask Art which streets fit your payment this season.
Granville W. Huffaker drove some 500 head of cattle into the Truckee Meadows in 1858 and set his ranch on Thomas Creek the next year. By statehood in 1864 Huffaker’s was a community of about 300 with hotels and a post office, it gained a Virginia & Truckee Railroad stop in 1872 and became the terminus of the great lumber flume from Tahoe in 1875. The little 1867 schoolhouse taught ranch children until 1950 and now stands restored at Bartley Ranch Regional Park, while Huffaker’s 1881 brick ranch house still stands on South Virginia, a town older than Reno hiding inside it.
