The Stewart Indian School opened south of the capital on December 17, 1890, with thirty-seven Washoe, Paiute, and Western Shoshone children in its first class. It was a federal boarding school built to separate Native children from their families and their cultures, and some thirty thousand students from more than two hundred tribal nations passed through before it closed in 1980. The stone buildings that give the campus its beauty were raised by the students themselves, taught by Hopi masons.
