A city ran here before the golf course did. Empire City rose on the Carson River in the 1860s as the Comstock’s mill town · the Mexican Mill was the first quartz mill on the river, the Morgan Mill followed, and loggers floated Sierra timber down the current to feed Virginia City’s furnaces and mine shafts. Perhaps four hundred people lived here at the peak in the early 1870s. When the Comstock faded, the desert took the town back; the red superintendent’s house near the second hole still stands from those years. The river, the wetlands, and the name survived · and the paperwork on riverside parcels still rewards a careful read.
